#spidersforpestcontrol #spidersarefriendsnotfoes The other two were found on the #ForestFloor, espied amongst the #LeafLitter. Having spiders in agroecosystems early can help keep incoming pest populations under control (go spiders!). This independence also explains why wolf spiders are often the first spiders to inhabit #agroecosystems, like in picture number 3, which was taken in a to-be #CornField. Because they are independent of flora, these spiders are more widespread than some of their flora-dependent, web-spinning counterparts. I have seen some on foliage in the past, but most of the time they are found on the ground. Here are some more #WolfSpiders ( #Araneae: #Lycosidae), which are #cursorial (hunting on foot) and generally #epigeal (soil-dwellers). Did you know that only about half of the extant spider species use webs to ensnare prey? The remaining half use various methods from running down prey on foot to leaping onto their prey, or from using trap doors to using camouflage to blend in with flowers.
